AEG NEW YORK

The Big Apple has long been at the forefront of global ambition and innovation. Following the milestone 2019 Climate Mobilization Act and the declaration of a “climate emergency”, New York City now sets its sights on a 100% reduction in net GHG emissions by 2050. This ambitious target is accompanied by initiatives encompassing clean energy infrastructure, green job creation, universal healthcare access, and a more robust public transportation system.

New York State has followed suit, passing the country’s most ambitious climate targets to date, including 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040 and economy-wide, net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Key targets and metrics:

New York City

  • Net-zero carbon emissions by 2050

  • Sustainability: Lower beef and processed meat consumption, eliminate unnecessary single-use plastics, mandate carbon-neutral city vehicles

  • Transportation: Introduce congestion pricing and bolster public transportation to address emission and traffic issues, create pedestrian-focused People Priority Zones

  • Community Health: Address the opioid epidemic, establish universal healthcare, strengthen workers’ protections

New York State

  • Economy-wide GHG reduction from 1990 levels: 40% by 2030, 85% by 2050

  • Net-zero carbon emissions by 2050

  • Zero-emission energy statewide: 70% by 2030, 100% by 2040

  • 35% of clean energy & energy efficiency benefits directed to disadvantaged communities
